Sport and Leisure

There are a wide variety of Sports and Leisure activities in and around Ballyhaunis and with the Connaught GAA Centre of Excellence open just  outside the town we are more than spoilt for choice.

Just look through the list in the organisations section of this site you are sure to find something that will interest you. If your favourite sport is football, hurlingsoccer or rugby you will certainly be well served as Ballyhaunis has some of the best teams in the region (some may even say the country).

The town is also an excellent base for many more sports and activities with such events as the Ballyhaunis 8k race which is held in September now attracting olympian runners.

You don't have to wait until September of course as the lanes and paths around the town are ideal for running, cycling or walking at any time of the year and you will come across fairy forts, standing stones and other megalithic features at every turn in the road.

Another of our towns gems is the scenic Ballyhaunis golf course which will delight even the most experienced golfer as will the very reasonable green fees.

Perhaps one of our best kept secret though is the coarse fishing.  The countryside around Ballyhaunis is dotted with lakes and rivers teaming with fish. The coarse fishing in the region has never suffered from over exploitation as it has in many other places and you won't have much of a wait until you see the truth of this yourself.

There are many specimen size fish in our waters but probably none to compete with the size of the whoppers that got away from some of the locals that you may meet in one of our friendly pubs after your days fishing.
